We had been dreaming about it for years, but hadn't been brave enough to try it - making our own sushi. A friend and I finally had dinner together and decided to try. I had made hand-roll sushi before, but I had never used the bamboo rollers. And it turns out that... it's easier than it looks!

We've been busy in the garden this year, and due to the care and attention of the girls, we actually have productive plants. One key has been keeping the tomatoes, cucumbers, and eggplant on the balcony, so they are away from the deer that roam through our yard.

We do have more plants on the patio and in the back yard, but they aren't really photo-worthy yet. On the patio, Elizabeth is growing lettuce and radishes. So far, we've had one tiny salad from her garden.

In the back yard, we have mostly squashes: zucchini, pumpkin, acorn, and some other *mystery* squash plants. Helen has a watermelon, but I am doubtful about it's potential, since it is only about 3 inches high and it's already July. I also have a few rows of beans planted this year, and they're looking pretty good. Beans grow well in our mild climate.
Now, last year, I had a horrible time getting our squash plants - both winter and summer varieties - to produce because the deer would come along and eat the tender baby fruits. This year, however, we have plant protection. The summer squash and beans are protected by an old baby play pen, covered by bird netting, and the larger squashes have plastic chicken wire fencing to protect them.
