I'm thinking about the new year ahead and starting to develop a plan for what I would like life to be like in 2011. I'm pretty organized now, but there are just a few things that I would like to have in better order. I also don't want to place too many expectations upon myself, otherwise the result will be a feeling of failure, not a feeling of control over my environment.

Some quick notes about expectations in a house with three small children:
  • Don't expect to do any given task or project for more than 15 minutes. Just about anything can be done in 15 minutes, anyhow. If not, come back to it later. It can wait.
  • Have a designated "time-in" for children. This engages you with the kids and decreases the likelihood that you'll feel that you are neglecting them.
  • Make time for yourself! This is a big goal of mine for the coming year. I need to find a regular babysitter - for all three kids - and carve out time with adults.
Keeping that in mind, I am planning out 2011. I need a bit more time to sort out my goals.

Friday, December 17, 2010

It' a rainy Friday in December, with both girls home on the first day of the holiday recess. The week was filled with recitals and parties, and everyone is ready for some downtime, I think. Additionally, my oldest daughter is having some tummy troubles.

So, today, we will do things in 20-minute increments. You can do more in 20 minutes than you think. I have to stop every so often to feed or change the baby, feed or help kids, etc. Here's how we chose to do our rounds:
  1. Exercise
  2. Clean up - kitchen
  3. Read with kids
  4. Christmas cards
  5. Clean up - bathrooms
  6. Laundry
And that's about 2 hours. Repeat with whatever 6 things you want to do today. One of those 20-minute slots should be about taking care of you.
